American Airlines’ Unveils New Flight Path For BlackAtlas.com

By D.A. Barber.

After three and a half years, American Airlines pulled the plug on BlackAtlas.com, considered one of the more popular travel websites among African-American travelers.

On May 17, the Black Atlas Editor announced on Facebook that, “On May 31, we’ll close our Black Atlas Facebook page in favor of a broader fan discussion on the American Airlines page. We invite you to join the conversation there! ”

In fact, visitors to the BlackAtlas.com site will find it is gone, but they can see a message that reads: “We’ve got a new flight Path. You may have heard about the big changes taking place at American Airlines. Now, in an effort to bring you the latest news and information about this transformation, we invite you to explore our journey as we bring you a more modern, comfortable and connected travel experience. BlackAtlas.com will become part of the larger American Airlines travel community, and we hope you will continue to visit. We’ll catch you in the air.”

American Airlines launched BlackAtlas.com in October 2009 in partnership with Burrell Communications and Juxt Interactive as a “first-of-its-kind” social networking site, “which combines the best features of a travel site with the power of social networking to create a dynamic online community for travelers to share experiences unique to the black community.”

“We at American Airlines see BlackAtlas.com as an important connector, enabling an online community of travelers to share information about their favorite places for experiencing African-American and Black culture, food, music, literature, history, and events across the globe,” said Roger Frizzell, American’s Vice President of Corporate Communications and Advertising during the site launch in 2009.

The BlackAtlas site now directs you to aa.com.
